La Moda: The Glamour of Italian Fashion

An exhibition at the Victoria&Albert Museum celebrates Italy's rich contribution to modern fashion

The La Moda: The Glamour of Italian Fashion exhibition, that will be inaugurated on April 5 at the Victoria&Albert museum in London and will run through July 27, explores Italian fashion and its development into the important industry of craftsmanship it is today.

There is a focus on the techniques, materials and expertise seen in haute couture, innovative ready-to-wear collections and accessories. This extraordinary show examines Italy’s rich contribution to modern fashion, featuring around 100 ensembles from the V&A’s collections and international lenders, including some unique archive material from the traditional fashion house Missoni.

Some memorable pieces will be shown for the occasion, highlighting Missoni’s influence in the creation of Italian style, while drawings by the late artist Antonio Lopez will be showcased in the exhibition catalog. Antonio Lopez electrified the fashion world in the 1970s and 1980s with the amazing fashion illustrations he published in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Interview.

He defined the style of a whole fashion generation. He usually worked out of his apartment on Boulevard St.-Germain, a large modern white space loaned to him by his friend Karl Lagerfeld, where exciting characters and trendsetters came and went. But for the illustrations for the 1983 F/W ad campaign commissioned by Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, featuring a fierce archer, Antonio took inspiration from the tranquil countryside of Sumirago, where he had noticed an archery club close to the Missoni factory.

Missoni treasures this unique testimony of time and space, created by an exceptional artist who painted with many colours and went far beyond reality in his drawings.
